A celebrated firefighter from Limerick, Eugene Cusack, passed away at the age of 52 after a brief illness. Known for his nearly three decades of service, he was surrounded by family and friends at Milford Hospice when he died last month. Eugene’s contributions to the community were profound, and his passing has left a void felt deeply by both his loved ones and his colleagues in the fire service.

The emotional impact of Eugene’s loss is particularly significant for his family, including his beloved wife Elaine and their children, Conor, Evan, and Grace. His parents, Tommy and Kitty, along with his siblings, are also mourning the loss of a devoted family member. Paul McMahon, Chief Fire Officer of Limerick Fire and Rescue Service, expressed the sentiments of many, stating, “All of us in Limerick Fire and Rescue Service are deeply saddened by the passing of sub station officer Eugene Cusack.”

A Legacy of Service and Dedication

Eugene Cusack dedicated over 27 years to serving the community of Limerick and its surrounding areas. His exemplary service earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and the communities he served. McMahon highlighted Eugene’s character, describing him as “an honest, kind, and dedicated member” of the team. The scale of Eugene’s funeral underscored the high regard in which he was held, drawing large crowds from his home community in Killaloe and beyond.

Tributes poured in across social media, where the Limerick Fire and Rescue Service lauded Eugene’s work ethic, integrity, and compassion. Not only was he a celebrated firefighter, but he also played a key role in supporting young people through his work on the Transition Year programme for secondary school students. Additionally, he led the service to the World Police and Firefighter Games in Belfast in 2013, demonstrating his commitment to both public service and sport.

Over 60 members of Limerick Fire and Rescue Service honored Eugene at his funeral in Killaloe. Firefighters formed a guard of honor, shouldered his coffin during the church service, and escorted him to Shannon Crematorium in a vintage fire truck. The procession was accompanied by the haunting tunes of bagpipes played by Mike Egan.

Community Response and Personal Tributes

The response from the community has been overwhelming, with many expressing their sorrow and admiration for Eugene. Fr. James Grace, who officiated the funeral Mass, noted the challenges Eugene faced in his final months, highlighting his bravery and determination to maintain normalcy for his family. “He got on with life as best he could and wanted things to be as normal as possible for his family,” said Fr. Grace.

Eugene’s reputation extended beyond the fire department. He was known for his calm demeanor in high-pressure situations, including his quick response to a school bus crash near Caherconlish. His expertise also included training many firefighters who attended his funeral. The outpouring of condolences has been significant, with an entire section dedicated to tributes on the memorial website rip.ie.

One mourner encapsulated Eugene’s spirit, stating, “Eugene radiated love, warmth, compassion, and positivity wherever he went. He will be deeply missed by anyone who had the pleasure to meet him and work with.”

The Smith O’Brien’s GAA and Camogie Club paid a heartfelt tribute, acknowledging Eugene as an inspirational leader who led by example. His legacy in the community and the fire service will be remembered for years to come. May he rest in peace.
