UHG Faces Bed Crisis as Patients Remain Stuck in Hospital
University Hospital Galway (UHG) is currently experiencing a significant crisis, with dozens of patients unable to be discharged due to insufficient home and community support services. As of this morning, the hospital has activated surge areas in response to the overwhelming demand, with 60 patients on trolleys in the Emergency Department awaiting admission.
In addition to these patients, there are 42 individuals classified as Delayed Discharge of Care. These patients are medically stable and ready to leave the hospital but are waiting for additional support either at home or through community services. The situation at UHG has led to prolonged waiting times for admissions and the cancellation of some elective procedures.
UHG officials are urging the public to utilize alternative healthcare options, such as consulting their General Practitioner (GP), accessing out-of-hours services, or visiting the Roscommon Injury Unit, instead of heading directly to the Emergency Department unless it is an emergency.
A statement from UHG acknowledged the difficulties these delays impose on patients and their families. “The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause,” the statement read.
The hospital emphasized its commitment to treating all individuals who present at the Emergency Department. Patients with serious injuries or illnesses will continue to receive priority, while those requiring non-urgent care may face longer waiting periods.
As UHG navigates this challenging period, the need for enhanced community and home support services becomes increasingly apparent. The ongoing strain on hospital resources highlights the critical importance of coordinated healthcare services to ensure timely patient care.
