University of Limerick Honours Ruth Negga and Rhiannon Giddens

The University of Limerick awarded honorary doctorates to actress Ruth Negga and musician Rhiannon Giddens during a ceremony held on March 6, 2023. The event took place at the university’s Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, where both artists were celebrated for their exceptional contributions to the arts.

In a heartfelt address, Professor Shane Kilcommins, Acting President of the University of Limerick, praised the two honorees. He remarked, “Today, we recognise not just the excellence of their craft, but the spirit, bravery, and integrity with which they practice it.” He emphasized how their work inspires students and expands the possibilities for future generations.

Negga and Giddens were conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by Professor Brigid Laffan, the Chancellor of the university. The ceremony was attended by family, friends, and invited guests who gathered to honour the achievements of these remarkable individuals.

He noted that Giddens’ four-year residency at the Irish World Academy has significantly enriched the campus community and influenced its curriculum.

Giddens, a two-time Grammy Award winner, has made a profound impact on music and culture. She has dedicated her career to amplifying marginalized voices in the historical narrative of music, particularly those of African American musicians. As the Artistic Director of the Silkroad Ensemble, she fosters cultural collaboration through music.

Negga, born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has become a prominent figure in film and theatre. After moving to Limerick at the age of four, she pursued acting at Trinity College Dublin. Her breakthrough role came with the film Breakfast on Pluto in 2005, and she gained further recognition for her performance in the series Love/Hate and the film Loving, which earned her an Academy Award nomination. In 2021, her work in the period drama Passing garnered critical acclaim, while her Broadway debut in Macbeth earned her a nomination for a Tony Award in 2022.

The honorary doctorate is one of the highest distinctions a university can bestow. According to Professor Kilcommins, awarding it acknowledges not only the individual achievements of Negga and Giddens but also the broader contributions of the arts to society.
