Donegal County Council Suspends X Account Over Safety Concerns

Donegal County Council has suspended its activity on the social media platform X due to rising concerns over harmful content. This decision follows a motion introduced by Councillor Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig last month, which highlighted the presence of AI-generated sexual abuse images circulating on the platform. The motion underscored that these disturbing materials were being disseminated through X’s AI chatbot, Grok.

In his motion, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig expressed deep concerns: “X has become a platform where the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and adults is widely reported and insufficiently addressed.” He argued that as a public body with a duty of care, the Council should not engage with or support a platform that fails to protect its users from such threats. Instead, he advocated for the use of alternative communication channels that better reflect the Council’s safeguarding responsibilities and public values.

The council members unanimously passed the motion, which set a one-month timeline for creating an “exit strategy” from X. On October 20, 2023, the Council officially announced that it had suspended its posting activities on the platform, although previous posts will remain visible to users.

This shift underscores the Council’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its community members while prioritizing ethical online engagement.
