Seán Canney Discusses Regional Independents’ Role in Government
Seán Canney, a member of the Irish Parliament since 2016, has taken on a prominent role within the coalition government as the leader of the Regional Independents. This comes after a politically charged beginning to the current Dáil term where Taoiseach Micheál Martin firmly supported Michael Lowry amid a controversy regarding speaking rights. Canney’s leadership places him at the forefront of discussions with both Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris, as he represents his colleagues in critical government meetings.
In a recent interview with The Journal just before the Christmas break, Canney shared insights into the dynamics of the Regional Independents, a group composed of diverse members including Lowry, Marian Harkin, Barry Heneghan, and others. Despite the controversies surrounding Lowry’s past, including findings by the Moriarty Tribunal, Canney remains committed to collaboration, stating, “I’d describe him as a wise man, from a political point of view.” He emphasized the importance of guidance for new TDs, highlighting the value of experience within their ranks.
Canney underscored the group’s cohesion, noting that all members are treated equally without any sense of superiority. “There’s no prima donnas in our group,” he asserted, emphasizing the practical approach required in politics. Reflecting on his previous tenure in government, Canney indicated that personal grievances must be set aside to focus on effective governance. He referenced a previous conflict with Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, revealing that their relationship has since improved, now described as “a very good working relationship.”
While the number of bills passed in 2025 dropped to 21 from 44 in 2024, Canney remains optimistic about the government’s progress. He currently serves as a Minister of State in the Department of Transport, overseeing International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports. He noted that the workload has increased significantly compared to his last term, as he now participates in Cabinet discussions and various sub-committees.
Canney expressed satisfaction with the funding secured during government formation negotiations, which includes significant investments in public transport. He highlighted the expansion of services, noting, “The biggest success story has been our public transport.” He acknowledged the growing demand for public transport, stating, “The most complaints I get now are about buses being full, trains being full, and standing room only.”
Looking towards the future of the coalition, Canney praised both Harris and Martin for their leadership capabilities. He remains confident in Harris’s new role as Minister for Finance, asserting, “He has got a good grasp of it.” Canney also addressed concerns regarding internal pressures on Martin within Fianna Fáil, clarifying that these issues are separate from the government’s stability.
On a personal note, Canney reflected on his passion for public service, stating, “I like being in politics probably more than people might think.” He shared that receiving gratitude from constituents for assistance in their local matters brings him fulfillment, reinforcing his commitment to “making a difference for people.”
As the coalition government progresses, Canney’s commitment to collaboration and effective governance remains a central theme in his approach, aiming to address the needs of constituents while navigating the complexities of political alliances.
