US Airports Implement New DNA Collection Amid Security Overhaul

New security measures have been implemented at United States airports, granting officials the authority to request DNA samples from travellers when deemed necessary. These regulations, effective as of December 26, 2023, primarily affect non-citizens entering or departing the country.

The updated laws enable airport officials to take photographs of visitors and utilize facial recognition technology to compare their identities against existing databases. These measures aim to identify individuals potentially intending to overstay their visas in the United States. According to government documents reported by Reuters, records obtained under these new rules can be retained for as long as 75 years.

Expanded Biometric Data Collection

In addition to DNA, the Department of Homeland Security can now demand other biometric information, including fingerprints, from non-US citizens. Previously, facial recognition technology was exempt for children aged 14 and under, as well as travellers aged 79 and older. Effective immediately, these exemptions have been removed, meaning all travellers may now be subject to biometric scanning upon arrival or departure.

These changes are part of a broader initiative introduced during the administration of former President Donald Trump. Officials assert that the goal is to enhance security measures aimed at identifying potential threats and curbing visa overstays.

Delays are anticipated as these new procedures are rolled out. The American Aviation Authority forecasts that approximately 8 million people will fly into and within the United States during the Christmas holiday season. December 27 is expected to be the busiest travel day, prompting officials to advise passengers to allocate extra time for security checks and passport control.
