Limerick University Secures €1 Million for Microplastics Research

The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has been awarded over €1 million from the Research Ireland National Challenge Fund (NCF) to address the pressing issue of microplastics in forestry. This achievement represents a significant milestone for TUS, marking its first success in the prize phase of the NCF. The announcement was made by James Lawless TD, the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, on March 15, 2024.

TUS was one of six teams selected to receive funding from an €8 million prize pool for its innovative project, known as Traceless. The initiative aims to tackle the environmental challenges posed by plastic tree shelters, which degrade into harmful microplastics. The project is led by Dr. Yuanyuan Chen of TUS, in collaboration with co-lead Professor Maurice Collins from the University of Limerick and industry partner Maurice Ryan from Green Belt Ltd.

Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Forestry

The Traceless project seeks to replace conventional plastic tree shelters with fully biodegradable and durable tree-support products. These new products also incorporate controlled-release fertilizers, promoting healthier soil while reducing plastic waste. The initiative has the potential to position Ireland as a leader in sustainable forestry solutions, aligning with EU plastic reduction targets.

Dr. Liam Brown, Vice President of Research, Development & Innovation at TUS, expressed pride in the achievement. He stated, “This is a first for TUS and is a testament to our commitment to finding practical, scalable solutions to the global sustainability challenge. This project clearly demonstrates how applied research can deliver real-world impact and how innovation and sustainability are interlinked.”

The funding will enable the Traceless team to scale its solution, reinforcing Ireland’s commitment to environmentally responsible forestry practices on a global stage. By addressing the issues of microplastics in this sector, the project not only aims to enhance soil health but also contributes to broader environmental sustainability efforts.
