Tech Entrepreneur Bryan Johnson Explores Psychedelics for Longevity
Bryan Johnson, a 48-year-old venture capitalist and founder of the electronic payment company Braintree, is making headlines again. Known for his unconventional quest for immortality, Johnson recently ventured into the realm of psychedelics by consuming magic mushrooms during a live-streamed event titled Bryan Johnson Takes Magic Mushrooms. This event, which included high-profile guests such as YouTuber MrBeast and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, sought to explore the potential effects of psilocybin on cognitive function and longevity.
Johnson, who sold Braintree to PayPal for $800 million in 2013, has dedicated substantial resources to his pursuit of youthful vitality. He reportedly spends around $2 million annually on an array of health interventions, which include a strict diet, numerous supplements, and even blood plasma transfusions from his son, Talmage Johnson. His motto, “Don’t Die,” reflects his intense focus on reversing aging, a quest that has drawn both admiration and skepticism.
The live-streamed event featured a surreal setup, complete with a live DJ performance by Canadian pop star Grimes. Johnson consumed 5.24 grams of magic mushrooms, a dosage intended to induce a significant psychedelic experience. The event was moderated by technology journalist Ashlee Vance, who guided discussions among attendees about the implications of such a trip.
Johnson’s exploration of psychedelics is not without precedent. Research suggests that psilocybin may have potential benefits, including reducing inflammation and enhancing neuroplasticity, which could be critical in extending lifespan. Although Johnson does not claim that magic mushrooms hold the key to eternal life, he remains optimistic about their potential effects on health and well-being.
After the event, Johnson shared his reflections on social media, stating, “Life feels fresh today. New thoughts are flowing. My mind feels more nimble and curious.” He also proceeded with his usual morning routine, which includes brain scans and blood tests, further demonstrating his commitment to monitoring his health metrics.
Johnson’s journey invites a broader discussion about societal attitudes toward aging and mortality. His extreme measures resonate with a growing fixation on youth and vitality in contemporary culture. As he engages in this personal battle against the inevitable, he embodies the paradox of seeking to transcend human limitations while grappling with the reality of mortality.
The irony of Johnson’s situation is not lost on him. In a previous social media post, he remarked, “I guarantee I’m going to die in the most ironic way possible.” This acknowledgment reflects a deeper understanding of the human condition, where the pursuit of immortality may ultimately lead to a confrontation with the very essence of life itself.
As Bryan Johnson continues his unconventional quest, his actions provoke thought about the lengths to which individuals will go to defy aging. Whether or not his psychedelic experiment yields meaningful insights into longevity, it certainly highlights the complex relationship between life, death, and the human desire for permanence in an ephemeral world.
