University of Limerick Invests Millions to Attract Global Researchers
The University of Limerick (UL) has announced a significant investment aimed at enhancing its research capabilities through the recruitment of top-tier global talent. The initiative, named UL Changemakers, seeks to attract exceptional researchers to support the institution’s ambitious academic and societal goals.
This multi-million-euro campaign is designed to open 35 academic positions across various disciplines, including social justice, democratic resilience, artificial intelligence, pharmaceutical science, and bioprocessing. Additionally, there will be vacancies within the Kemmy Business School, reflecting UL’s commitment to fostering a diverse and high-performing research environment.
Supporting Ireland’s Research Landscape
The initiative has garnered support from James Lawless, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. He expressed enthusiasm for UL’s proactive approach, stating, “The move to launch UL Changemakers is most welcome, and aligns perfectly with the approach that I and my Department have been taking to make Ireland a welcoming and desirable location for top international researchers.” Lawless emphasized the program’s long-term impact on critical disciplines necessary for the future development of the economy and society.
Acting President Prof Shane Kilcommins highlighted the transformative potential of the campaign, describing it as “a bold and necessary investment in the power of research to shape a better future.” He explained that UL’s goal is not only to advance knowledge but also to inform policy and strengthen communities through impactful scholarship.
Commitment to Innovation and Excellence
The university’s emphasis on attracting innovative thinkers was echoed by Prof Kevin Ryan, Vice President of Research and Innovation. He stated, “We are seeking researchers who not only excel in their disciplines but who are eager to challenge conventions, push boundaries, inspire innovation, and deliver research that makes a real difference in society.” Ryan underscored that enhancing research performance will be pivotal for UL’s future as it transitions into a research-intensive institution.
Dick Meaney, a board member of the UL Foundation, reinforced the Foundation’s commitment to supporting initiatives that drive meaningful change. He remarked, “Supporting initiatives like this is at the heart of the Foundation’s mission – projects that bring together talented researchers, bold ideas, and the potential for real-world impact.” Meaney also noted the Foundation’s dedication to securing funding for professorships and PhD scholarships, which will sustain the university’s research efforts for years to come.
The launch of UL Changemakers represents a crucial step in UL’s strategy to enhance its global research profile and attract diverse academic talent. More information about the campaign and available positions can be found at www.ul.ie/changemakers.
