US Army Plans to Deploy Humanoid Robots on the Battlefield
The United States Army is preparing for a future where humanoid robots could replace soldiers on the battlefield. California-based company, Foundation Future Industries, is developing a robotic system known as the Phantom, designed specifically for military applications. This robot stands at 1.8 meters tall, weighs 82 kilograms, and can carry over 20 kilograms of gear or weaponry.
The Phantom’s design emphasizes human-like mobility and adaptability. Its upper torso is equipped with essential components, including sensors, computers, cameras, and batteries, enabling it to navigate environments built for human use. The lower torso features advanced actuators and a sophisticated balancing system, allowing the robot to traverse rough terrain, climb stairs, and maintain stability under significant loads.
Potential Roles on the Battlefield
Foundation Future Industries envisions the Phantom performing various roles in military operations. These include surveillance, logistical support, transporting weapons and equipment, and replacing personnel in hazardous situations, such as exploring confined spaces or caves. The company aims to produce 50,000 Phantom robots for the US military by 2027.
Although the Phantoms will not possess full autonomy in combat decision-making, the developers believe their widespread deployment could influence strategic calculations, potentially deterring conflicts. The mere presence of these sophisticated machines may discourage adversaries from initiating hostilities.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Sankaet Pathak, CEO of Foundation Future Industries, posited that a demonstration involving 100,000 Phantoms could even prevent wars altogether.
Expert Opinions and Concerns
Nevertheless, military experts express caution regarding the assumption that the introduction of humanoid robots will automatically lead to a reduction in conflicts. Some argue that the use of such technology could inadvertently increase the likelihood of military action by diminishing the perceived risks and consequences associated with warfare.
The development of the Phantom robot represents a significant advancement in military technology, poised to reshape the landscape of warfare. As the US Army prepares for this potential shift, the balance between human and robotic capabilities on the battlefield remains a topic of intense discussion and analysis.
