US Military Prepares for Humanoid Robot Rollout by 2027

The future battlefield may soon feature humanoid robots instead of traditional soldiers. On December 22, 2025, Foundation Future Industries, a California-based company, announced its development of the Phantom robot, designed specifically for military applications. Standing at a height of 1.8 metres and weighing 82 kg, each Phantom can carry over 20 kg of equipment or weaponry.

The Phantom’s design focuses on replicating human-like mobility and adaptability. Its upper torso accommodates essential components such as sensors, computers, cameras, and batteries, allowing it to navigate environments built for humans. The lower torso employs advanced actuators and a sophisticated balancing system, enabling the robot to traverse rough terrain, climb stairs, and maintain stability under heavy loads.

Versatile Roles on the Battlefield

The Foundation envisions the Phantom taking on a variety of roles in military operations. These include surveillance, logistical support, and transporting weapons and equipment. Additionally, the robots may replace personnel in high-risk situations, such as exploring confined spaces or caves. Foundation Future Industries aims to produce a total of 50,000 Phantom robots for the US military by 2027.

While the Phantoms will not possess full autonomy in combat decision-making, Foundation believes that their large-scale deployment can alter strategic calculations and potentially deter conflicts. The presence of these formidable machines may discourage adversaries from initiating hostilities. In a statement to Forbes, Foundation’s CEO, Sankaet Pathak, suggested that a demonstration involving 100,000 Phantoms could prevent wars altogether.

Concerns and Considerations

Despite the ambitious plans, experts express caution regarding the assumption that humanoid robots will lead to fewer conflicts. Some analysts argue that the introduction of such technology could paradoxically increase the likelihood of military action. By reducing the perceived risks and consequences of warfare, these robots might make conflict more attractive to military planners.
