Walton Institute Launches €4 Million Initiative for Quantum Training
The Walton Institute at South East Technological University has been selected to coordinate a groundbreaking initiative called Questing, a €4 million project under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). This doctoral network aims to train the next generation of experts in quantum internet technology, uniting nine European universities and 13 industry partners to address critical technological challenges facing the continent.
Questing stands out as the first doctoral network focused on the complete lifecycle of distributed quantum networks. Over the next several years, it will train 15 fully-funded PhD candidates, known as ‘Q-System Innovators.’ These specialists will possess a rare interdisciplinary skill set that encompasses quantum technology, communications, computing, and social sciences.
Quantum networks are poised to revolutionise secure communications and distributed computing. However, Europe currently faces a significant skills gap in this field. By developing professionals who can design, manage, and operate these systems at scale, Questing seeks to enhance Europe’s competitive edge in the race to establish the Quantum Internet.
Building a Harmonised Curriculum
The project aims to create a harmonised doctoral curriculum that will become the European standard for training in quantum network systems. Dr Indrakshi Dey, Principal Investigator of Questing at Walton Institute, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative. “We are not just offering 15 PhD positions,” she stated. “We are inviting exceptional minds to join an elite, interdisciplinary team backed by industry leaders and world-class infrastructure.”
The impact of the Questing project extends beyond academia. As the coordinator, Walton Institute will manage the entire consortium, thereby bolstering its international profile and attracting top doctoral talent to the southeast region of Ireland. The institute’s extensive experience in leading large-scale EU projects positions it well for this ambitious endeavour.
Dr Deirdre Kilbane, Director of Research at Walton Institute, highlighted the significance of the project: “We are expanding on our existing quantum expertise with the announcement of this Questing project here in Walton Institute. Our team of researchers will be leaders in theoretical modelling and optimisation of advanced quantum networks which will benefit society in untold ways.”
Collaborative Efforts Across Europe
The Questing consortium includes prestigious institutions such as Trinity College Dublin and the University of Galway’s Irish Centre for High-End Computing. Industry collaborators are equally impressive, featuring major players like Airbus Defence and Space, British Telecommunications, Telecom Italia, and the Austrian Institute of Technology.
As the demand for advanced quantum technologies continues to grow, initiatives like Questing are crucial for ensuring that Europe remains at the forefront of this rapidly evolving field. By investing in the training of experts who can navigate the complexities of quantum networks, the project not only addresses immediate workforce needs but also lays the groundwork for future innovations that could transform society.
