The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has revived plans for a significant new sports facility in Limerick. The proposed development, located at the university’s Coonagh campus, aims to construct a 22-metre high multi-sports dome that will feature a 200-metre indoor cycling track. This initiative is part of TUS’s broader vision to enhance sports and community infrastructure in the area.

The newly proposed arena will encompass a total area of 7,201 square metres, designed to accommodate various sports such as gymnastics, badminton, volleyball, tennis, and football. The facility will also serve as a venue for educational and community events, positioning itself as a versatile space for the local population. The arena will offer seating for approximately 476 spectators, making it suitable for hosting a range of activities, including examinations, graduations, conferences, exhibitions, and cultural events.

TUS initially sought planning permission for this ambitious project early last year but withdrew the application shortly thereafter. With the renewed proposal, the university is now looking to secure the necessary approvals to move forward. If granted, detailed design and procurement phases will follow, allowing the project to progress toward completion.

In addition to the sports facilities, the development plan includes 32 car parking spaces, with several designated for electric vehicle charging. Furthermore, there will be 48 covered bike spaces and new pedestrian links to enhance accessibility for all users. The design of the dome is intended to be contemporary, maximizing energy efficiency and operational flexibility.

TUS has expressed optimism about the potential impact of the arena on local sports and community engagement. By creating a space that caters to diverse activities, the university aims to foster a stronger sense of community and support the health and well-being of residents.

The revitalization of this project highlights a commitment to enhancing sporting opportunities in Limerick. As plans move forward, the anticipation grows for what this new facility will bring to the local area and its residents.
