Ryder Cup Rail Surprise: No Direct Trains from Limerick to Adare

Passengers traveling to the Ryder Cup in Adare will face significant changes in train services. As the tournament approaches, Irish Rail has confirmed that there will be no direct train services from Limerick’s main Colbert railway station to Adare. Instead, visitors will need to make a transfer at Limerick Junction.

The Ryder Cup, set to take place at Adare Manor in 2027, is expected to attract tens of thousands of spectators. In preparation for this influx, public transport plans are being developed to ensure smooth access to the venue. While Irish Rail plans to temporarily reopen Adare station for the event, the service will only connect to Limerick Junction in Tipperary via a shuttle train. According to the National Transport Authority (NTA), trains arriving from Dublin and Cork will stop at Limerick Junction, where passengers can switch to a shuttle service to the temporary station in Adare.

For those wishing to travel directly from Limerick city, road transport is being promoted as the primary option. The NTA has announced that shuttle buses will be stationed at Colbert station to transport attendees to Adare Manor. A spokesperson for the NTA confirmed, “Buses will be at this location at all relevant times to transport people to and from the Ryder Cup event.”

This plan aims to alleviate potential traffic congestion as the new Adare bypass is expected to be operational by the tournament date. However, it does mean that passengers who prefer rail travel from Limerick will need to change at Limerick Junction before proceeding to Adare.

Historically, a direct train service existed between Limerick Colbert station and Adare until 1975, when a connecting curve was removed. The NTA noted that the current railway configuration does not support a direct service to the newly revitalized Foynes line, which is primarily designed for freight use. As a result, the new line links to the Limerick to Limerick Junction line, further complicating rail travel for those heading to Adare.

With the Ryder Cup poised to provide a significant boost to the local economy, the absence of a direct rail connection may impact travel plans for many. Passengers arriving from areas such as Waterford, Cork, and Dublin will have to navigate the transfer at Limerick Junction rather than traveling directly to Adare.

As preparations for the Ryder Cup continue, the focus remains on ensuring that visitors have a streamlined experience getting to this prestigious golf tournament. The NTA will be monitoring transport arrangements closely in the lead-up to the event, emphasizing the importance of effective public transport for large-scale events.
