Newcastle United faced a late setback in their Champions League campaign, drawing 2-2 against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena on March 13, 2024. The match saw a series of dramatic twists, with Alejandro Grimaldo’s 88th-minute equaliser denying Newcastle a much-needed victory.

The Magpies initially struggled against a well-organized Leverkusen defence. Their fortunes changed in the second half, sparked by Anthony Gordon’s penalty in the 51st minute, which equalized after a misfortunate own goal by Bruno Guimaraes. Substitute Lewis Miley then put Newcastle ahead with a strong header in the 73rd minute, giving the visitors a brief lead before Grimaldo’s late intervention.

Newcastle began the match brightly but found it difficult to penetrate Leverkusen’s solid backline. Early attempts, including a distance shot from Harvey Barnes, were thwarted by goalkeeper Mark Flekken. The home side took the lead in the 13th minute when Robert Andrich headed a corner kick that inadvertently struck Guimaraes and found its way into the net.

Leverkusen’s momentum grew as they became more assertive in the midfield. Malik Tillman and Ernest Poku created chances for the lone striker, Patrik Schick. The first half saw a contentious moment when Dutch referee Serdar Gozubuyuk initially awarded a penalty against Malick Thiaw but later changed the decision to a free-kick just outside the area, earning Thiaw only a yellow card.

Newcastle’s first goal came from a penalty awarded to them after Flekken fouled Nick Woltemade in the box. Gordon stepped up to convert the penalty confidently, leveling the score at 1-1. The Magpies increased their attacking intensity, with Gordon hitting the post just minutes later.

Miley’s goal came from a well-placed cross by Gordon, allowing the young substitute to rise above defenders and head Newcastle into a 2-1 lead. However, the match took another turn when Grimaldo, after a well-timed pass from Maza, found space in the box and struck a powerful shot past Aaron Ramsdale to secure a draw for Leverkusen.

Looking ahead, Newcastle’s manager Eddie Howe will reflect on the missed opportunities as they prepare for their upcoming derby match against Sunderland. The performance featured both resilience and a reminder of the fine margins in high-stakes matches like this, leaving the team pondering what could have been had they converted their chances earlier.
