Wilfried Nancy Dismisses Criticism After Celtic’s Opening Defeat
Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy has chosen not to focus on the criticism that followed his debut defeat at the helm of the club. The French coach’s first match ended in a 2-1 loss to Hearts on March 10, 2024, leaving Celtic three points behind the leaders in the Scottish Premiership with a game in hand.
In his initial match at Parkhead, Nancy faced scrutiny for his use of a hand-held tactics board to communicate with players, and even faced comments regarding his choice of attire, specifically his green trainers. Despite this, the 48-year-old, who previously managed Columbus Crew and Montreal Impact, remains focused on his responsibilities rather than public opinion.
“I’m going to dress one way, maybe they are going to say that they don’t like the way I dress, so I don’t waste time on that,” Nancy stated ahead of an important Europa League match against Roma on March 14, 2024. He emphasized the importance of utilizing tools that benefit his coaching style, saying, “If I use it (the tactics board), it’s because it’s good for me. Simple as that, and I’m not saying that I’m going to use it all the time.”
Nancy acknowledged the challenges that come with the role and revealed that he has made a conscious effort to avoid distractions from social media. “This is part of the job. That’s why we study for that. And after that, I’m not here to comment on everything,” he said. He added, “I control what I can control, to be good with my players, with my club, with the people that I work with.”
Reflecting on the rapid pace of his adjustment to Celtic, Nancy shared that his mother expressed concern about the toll it might be taking on him. He remarked, “My mum told me that I have bags (under my eyes). I said, ‘Yeah, mummy, I just came in, jet-lagged, trying to anticipate everything.’ But again, this is part of our job. I’m really excited by that.”
Looking ahead, Nancy will lead his team into the Scottish League Cup final against St Mirren at Hampden Park on March 17, 2024. Despite the rocky start, he remains optimistic and dedicated to his new role at Celtic, prioritizing the well-being of his players and the club.
