UPDATE: Applications are officially OPEN for The Hare’s Corner, an urgent biodiversity initiative launching in Kilkenny for the first time. This groundbreaking project by Burrenbeo Trust invites landowners, schools, and community groups to apply for support in creating vital wildlife habitats before the deadline on January 18, 2026.

The Hare’s Corner aims to transform Kilkenny’s landscape by funding the establishment of wildlife ponds, mini-woodlands, hedgerows, and mini-orchards. This innovative program, inspired by the old farming term for less intensively farmed land, seeks to restore nature to areas that need it most.

Kilkenny joins eight other counties—Limerick, Offaly, Donegal, Monaghan, Kerry, Sligo, Louth, and Wexford—in this year’s initiative. Last year, the project celebrated its fifth anniversary by successfully creating 1,600 habitats across six counties in Ireland, demonstrating the significant impact of community-driven efforts on biodiversity.

This initiative is supported by a mix of public and private funding, including the National Parks and Wildlife Service’s Local Biodiversity Action Fund. It aligns with the National Biodiversity Action Plan 2023-2030 aimed at revitalizing Ireland’s natural habitats.
