UPDATE: The Donegal Sports Star Awards officially launched last night, honoring legendary athletes from 1976 and 1985 at a special reunion event at the Mount Errigal Hotel. This year marks a pivotal moment as the awards celebrate their 50th anniversary since their inception in 1976, with tributes paid to both past winners and those who have passed on.

The event, attended by sports icons and community members, served as a heartfelt reminder of the achievements that have shaped Donegal’s sports history. Grace Boyle, Chair of the Donegal Sports Star Awards, welcomed attendees and led a poignant remembrance for esteemed figures such as James Doherty, John McCrossan, and Tom Eaton, who were honored in 1976.

“We will all miss May Logue,” Grace said, referring to the recently deceased long-serving Secretary, who was recognized for her dedication in organizing the awards over the years. “May was a hugely respected figure who kept the rest of us right with her records from meetings.”

The 2025 awards will culminate in a ceremony on January 30, 2026, featuring Brian Kerr, former Republic of Ireland manager, as the guest of honor and keynote speaker. This promises to be an unforgettable night celebrating Donegal’s rich sports heritage.

This year’s launch specifically honored the achievements of local schools and athletes from 1985, reflecting on their impactful contributions. Winners included Danea Herron in athletics, Seamus Hegarty in boxing, and Martin McHugh in GAA, among others.

The reunion also highlighted the camaraderie and lasting friendships formed over decades, showcasing the profound impact of sport on the community. “Every year, we come together to celebrate not just the victories but the bonds we’ve created,” Grace added.

Looking ahead, the awards committee encourages community members to get involved and support the upcoming ceremony. The blend of nostalgia and celebration for both past and present athletes is expected to draw significant attendance from across the region.

As the countdown begins for the 2025 Donegal Sports Star Awards, excitement builds for a night dedicated to honoring the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement in Donegal. Stay tuned for further updates as we approach this landmark event.
