EU’s EPSO Exam Returns, Coaching Boom Offers Competitive Edge
UPDATE: The highly anticipated EPSO AD5 exam is back after a seven-year hiatus, igniting a surge in private coaching services aimed at candidates vying for coveted positions within the EU. With over 40,000 candidates expected to compete for a mere 3-4% pass rate, the stakes have never been higher for those hoping to secure a permanent role in European institutions.
The return of the EPSO exam follows a tumultuous period marked by IT failures, a costly cancellation estimated at €300,000, and scrutiny over the exam’s effectiveness from the European Ombudsman. As the exam resumes, private coaching firms like EU Training and ORSEU Concours are stepping in to provide essential support, offering courses, webinars, and personalized coaching to help candidates navigate this challenging process.
The financial allure of an EU position is undeniable, with salaries reaching up to €7,000 net per month. As candidates prepare, data reveals that those utilizing coaching services are 40% more likely to pass compared to their unprepared counterparts. Notably, candidates who engaged with both EU Training and ORSEU Concours scored an average of nine points higher on the 60-point scale, a critical margin that could determine their future in the EU.
Founded by Andras Baneth, who understands the exam’s challenges firsthand, EU Training has evolved from a simple book into a comprehensive platform featuring over 35,000 practice questions and extensive coaching. Similarly, ORSEU Concours, led by Caroline Fiche, has been a key player in this market since the 1990s, adapting its offerings to meet the needs of candidates preparing for the EPSO exam.
The structure of the EPSO exam is unique, featuring a combination of numerical, verbal, and abstract reasoning tests that are unforgiving to those unprepared. All tests are now conducted on the same day, demanding that candidates be fully equipped to tackle the rigorous format. As Fiche notes, “If you go into the test on testing day and you’ve never tried to understand the logic or practiced on real questions, there’s very little chance you’ll hit the pass mark on all tests.”
The existence of a robust coaching industry raises questions about fairness in this supposedly merit-based competition. While EPSO claims accessibility for all EU citizens, the reality is that candidates with financial means can secure an advantage. Baneth insists that anyone can pass without assistance, yet acknowledges the competitive edge provided by coaching.
The demographic landscape of candidates reveals significant disparities, particularly between southern and eastern Europeans seeking to bridge the income gap, where EU salaries vastly exceed local wages. Baneth points out that for many from countries like Romania or Greece, the salary difference is a “huge motivational factor.” In contrast, candidates from Nordic countries show less interest in EU roles due to smaller salary differences.
As the AD5 competition kicks off, both coaching companies are poised to support candidates in their quest for stability and influence within the EU. The pressing question remains: will every candidate truly have an equal shot at success?
Stay tuned for further updates as the competition unfolds and the impact of coaching services on candidates’ performance becomes clear.
