BREAKING: Emerging fashion designer Áine O’Donnell from Kilkenny is making headlines as she showcases her work at Ireland Fashion Week, marking a pivotal moment in her burgeoning career. Recently crowned Young Fashion Designer of the Year in 2024, Áine’s journey from a childhood dream to a runway reality is capturing the attention of the industry and fans alike.

Just last month, Áine presented an impressive collection featuring 12 unique looks, including creations for notable personalities such as Cork singer Lyra. This groundbreaking participation in a graduate show offered free slots to emerging designers, emphasizing the support for new talent in the competitive fashion landscape.

Áine’s passion for fashion ignited at the tender age of seven when she envisioned herself as a designer. “I found a little journal, and I wrote, ‘When I grow up, I want to be a fashion designer,’” she recalled. Her family background, with her mother being a hairdresser and her grandfather a stained glass artist, provided a rich creative environment that fostered her artistic ambitions.

Her defining moment came after a serious car accident at age 11, which left her hospitalized for weeks. During her recovery, Áine channeled her creativity into drawing and designing, captivating even the hospital staff with her sketches. “The nurses would come in and say, ‘I need this type of a top.’ I used to draw it for them. They were encouraging,” she shared.

The journey to recognition included internships during college at prestigious events like Paris Fashion Week with Ashley McDonald and London Fashion Week with Paul Costello. “Interns never really get to watch the show, but he brought us out, and we were sat front row. It was unbelievable,” Áine explained, recalling her transformative experience in 2024 when she also received her Young Designer accolade.

At the recent Ireland Fashion Week, Áine’s creations caught the eye of the fashion elite. “Lyra came up to me and said, ‘Girl, I want that. Can I wear that to the after-party?’” Áine recalled. To her astonishment, Lyra debuted the piece at the event, which left Áine in disbelief.

Despite the glamorous exterior of the fashion industry, Áine candidly described the reality: “It can look so glamorous, but it’s really not. I’ll be there sewing in my pajamas until 1 o’clock.” Balancing a full-time job and her passion, Áine emphasized the hard work behind her success, stating, “It’s working around the clock, but I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it.”

Inspired by the Georgian and Regency periods, Áine infuses florals, femininity, and romance into her designs, which were recently showcased for social media star Lottie Ryan ahead of the upcoming Gossies awards. The anticipation builds as Áine gears up for the event, further solidifying her status in the fashion realm.

Looking ahead, Áine dreams of owning her own bridal boutique, but for now, her focus remains on her designs and the buzz surrounding the Gossies. With her trajectory on the rise, Áine O’Donnell is a name to watch in the fashion industry as she continues to make her mark.
