Donegal Libraries Host Free Events to Celebrate Ireland Reads

Donegal County Library Service is actively participating in the national campaign, Ireland Reads, which aims to promote reading across Ireland. This initiative, part of the government’s Healthy Ireland programme, encourages individuals to engage with literature for enjoyment and well-being, culminating in Ireland Reads Day on Saturday, February 28, 2026. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Get Lost in a Good Book,” inviting readers of all ages to immerse themselves in literature.

Throughout February, Donegal libraries will host a variety of free events designed to foster a love for reading in the community. One highlight of the campaign is the opportunity to learn about BorrowBox, a digital library service that provides access to books, newspapers, and magazines. Local libraries will hold sessions on February 24 and 25 in locations including Gaoth Dobhair, Bundoran, and Donegal Town, making it easy for residents to discover the resources available at their fingertips.

In addition to these sessions, a series of lectures by historian Brian Lacey will take place at Central Library Letterkenny. These lectures will explore the early Donegal Kingdoms, providing historical insights on February 24, 25, and 26. This educational component adds depth to the celebration, allowing participants to connect literature with the rich history of the region.

Social media will also play a significant role in this year’s campaign. Local figures such as John Breslin and Catherine Devlin will share their thoughts on the importance of reading, encouraging community engagement.

A range of family-friendly activities is scheduled for Ireland Reads Day itself. On February 28, Central Library Letterkenny will host storytime and illustration workshops with artist Kim Sharkey at 11:00 and 13:00. Additionally, other libraries will hold unique exhibitions and craft sessions. For example, Buncrana Library will showcase photographs from the Thomas Doherty Collection, while Carndonagh Community Library will feature a Titanic-themed craft session for children.

Joseph Kelly, Executive Librarian from Donegal County Library Service, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. He stated, “We are delighted to bring the national campaign to celebrate reading to our community. We have an excellent array of activities and events lined up during the month of February to celebrate Ireland Reads and the very important role this positive activity fulfills in people’s lives.”

Kelly emphasized the numerous benefits of reading, noting that it enriches minds, reduces stress, and connects individuals to diverse ideas and stories. He encouraged everyone to visit their local library, stating that library membership is free and tailored reading recommendations are readily available.

Amanda Branigan, Chair of the Ireland Reads Working Group, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the campaign as a wonderful opportunity to celebrate reading for pleasure. “Libraries are welcoming spaces for everyone, offering thousands of books and eBooks tailored to all interests,” she noted. Branigan urged individuals across the country to take time in February to visit their local libraries, receive reading recommendations, and embrace the joys of literature.
