Man Jailed for 8 Years After Boiling Water Attack on Wife
BREAKING: A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pouring boiling water over his wife while she slept and then assaulting her with a claw hammer. The shocking incident occurred at their home in Knocknaheeny, Cork, at approximately 3:30 AM on 15 January 2024.
Court officials revealed that Noel Twomey (63) attacked his wife Jackie Twomey (59) after she returned home from a night out. Jackie was awoken by the searing water, leading to a brutal attack as Noel struck her multiple times with the hammer. This premeditated assault left Jackie with serious injuries, including a 3.5 cm scar on her scalp, and resulted in a six-day hospitalization due to fears of sepsis from her extensive burns.
In sentencing, Judge Dermot Sheehan described the attack as an “aggravating factor,” emphasizing that Jackie deserved to trust her husband not to harm her. He noted that she had “no opportunity to defend herself” during the brutal assault. The court also mandated that Noel Twomey have no contact—direct or indirect—with Jackie for the next 12 years.
After the attack, Noel was arrested at 5 AM after flagging down a patrol car, where he admitted to the crime. Despite a letter of apology from him read in court, he claimed, “I killed nobody. It was just a domestic with my wife.” His lack of remorse was evident as he continued to downplay the severity of his actions.
Jackie, visibly pained and shaken in court, expressed relief at the conclusion of the legal process, stating, “I am so happy it is over.” She described her agony during the attack, saying, “I woke up screaming like a banshee,” and recounted the terror of feeling her life was in imminent danger. “I should be dead. That was his plan.”
This harrowing case highlights the severe consequences of domestic violence, with Jackie now living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and ongoing pain from her injuries. She shared, “The psychological trauma is worse. I don’t think I will ever be the same person as I was before that night.”
Authorities continue to stress the importance of addressing domestic violence, and Jackie thanked the Gardaí, paramedics, and hospital staff for their support following the attack. The community remains shaken as this case sheds light on the often hidden struggles of domestic abuse survivors.
As the Twomey family grapples with the aftermath, Jackie remains hopeful for peace in the future, stating, “I have a very supportive family and friends who are 100% behind me.” The court’s decision serves as a crucial reminder of the urgent need for protection against domestic violence and the long-lasting impact such incidents have on victims and their families.
This case will resonate with many, emphasizing the need for vigilance and support for those affected by domestic violence.
