New Forensic Report Confirms Homicide in Kelly Lynch Case
UPDATE: A newly commissioned forensic report has determined that the death of Kelly Lynch, a 23-year-old woman found in a canal in Monaghan, was a homicide. This shocking conclusion directly contradicts the initial findings by Gardaí, who believed her death was an unfortunate accident.
Kelly Lynch was discovered in the Ulster Canal on March 17, 2024, approximately 30 hours after she was last seen following a night out. Gardaí theorized that Lynch fell from a bridge, asserting that her death was not suspicious. However, the new forensic report, funded by the Katie Trust, reveals a different narrative.
The report indicates that Lynch sustained an alarming total of 93 injuries, including defensive wounds, suggesting she fought against her assailant. Notably, some injuries were inflicted post-mortem, and no water was detected in her lungs, further supporting the homicide conclusion.
James Brannigan, a retired detective with the PSNI and head of the Katie Trust, emphasized the serious implications of the findings. “There are numerous marks on her body which are not conducive with falling off a bridge or drowning,” Brannigan stated during an interview. “As a homicide detective, I have grave concerns over this incident.”
The Lynch family is now demanding a thorough murder investigation. They have expressed frustration over how the case was initially handled, particularly regarding delays in preserving the scene and gathering vital CCTV footage.
Sinn Féin’s justice spokesperson, Matt Carthy, has called for a re-examination of the case. He urged the Minister for Justice to meet with Lynch’s family to discuss the findings.
Gardaí confirmed they are currently conducting a peer review of the original investigation and are appealing for anyone with additional information to come forward.
This developing story raises significant questions about the circumstances surrounding Kelly Lynch’s death and the adequacy of the initial investigation. The urgency of this situation is palpable, as the Lynch family seeks justice for their loved one amidst growing public interest and concern.
