Emergency services responded swiftly to a serious accident involving a school bus carrying approximately 40 children in Belleeks, Co Armagh, on February 17, 2024. The bus, which was transporting students from St Paul’s High School, overturned around 15:38 local time.

Ambulance, police, and fire services were alerted to the scene shortly before the crash. The bus overturned on the Tullyagh Road, coming to rest on its side. Reports indicate that five ambulances were dispatched to assist with the incident, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

A statement from the police confirmed the occurrence of the collision, advising road users to avoid the Tullyagh Road area between Newtownhamilton and Camlough. “An update will be issued in due course,” the police added, while they continue to assess the severity of the incident.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service also recognized the situation as a “significant incident.” According to their statement, multiple resources were deployed, including five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, one officer, and an ambulance doctor. They are currently providing treatment to the affected individuals.

Local representative Justin McNulty, MLA for Newry & Armagh, expressed relief that all children involved walked away from the scene with only minor injuries. “Thankfully, around 40 of them all walked away from the scene and are home,” McNulty stated. He noted that while a few children sustained minor injuries, the situation could have been much more serious.

McNulty also expressed concern for the well-being of the bus driver, stating, “My thoughts and prayers are with him and I’m hoping that he will be OK. This could have been very much more serious.”

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to gather more details about the incident. The focus remains on ensuring the safety and health of all individuals involved.

In the aftermath, parents and the community are left reflecting on the incident’s potential impact. The fortunate outcome, with most children escaping serious harm, serves as a reminder of the importance of safety in school transport. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
