Smartwings Completes 20th Antarctic Flight with Boeing 737 MAX

Czech Republic-based airline Smartwings has successfully completed its 20th logistical flight to the Troll Antarctic Research Station using a Boeing 737 MAX 8. This significant mission took place in late February, efficiently transporting supplies and personnel across Europe, Africa, and Antarctica.

The operation began on February 23, when the aircraft departed from Oslo Airport in Norway. It made stops in Prague, Czech Republic, and Abuja, Nigeria, before reaching Cape Town, South Africa, on February 24. This initial phase was crucial for positioning the aircraft closer to Antarctica while carrying essential cargo for the Norwegian research station.

Once in Cape Town, the crew prepared for the challenging polar leg of the journey. They monitored weather conditions and conducted operational checks for two days, waiting for a narrow weather window deemed safe for the flight to Antarctica. On February 26, the aircraft successfully departed Cape Town, landing at the ice runway serving the Troll Station.
