TUI Launches Urgent City Breaks to Bilbao for Spring 2024
URGENT UPDATE: TUI has just announced an exciting new city break destination for spring 2024: the vibrant city of Bilbao in the Basque Country. As British travelers seek alternatives to the crowded Spanish Costas, this northern gem is rapidly gaining popularity, with visitor numbers to the Basque Country having surged by 40% last year.
Travelers weary of typical tourist traps can now explore a distinctive side of Spain. Despite welcoming only 182,000 tourists annually, the Basque Country is becoming a hot spot for those craving a unique experience. TUI will operate flights to Bilbao from four major UK airports: Bristol, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, and Manchester, making it ideal for a quick getaway.
With flights from London taking under two hours, this destination is perfect for an extended weekend or short break. The first departures are set for April 21, 2026, with package deals starting at just £451 per person based on two adults sharing a Double or Twin Standard Room at Hotel Sirimiri.
In a recent article, a travel writer for Lonely Planet noted the breathtaking approach to Bilbao Airport, stating, “When your plane banks toward Bilbao Airport for the final approach, the lush forest passing below looks nothing like the Spain you thought you knew.” The region’s mild climate provides a refreshing contrast to the sun-baked southern resorts, with temperatures averaging around 17°C in March and April, reaching 26°C in summer.
Bilbao, nestled along the banks of the Nervión River, offers a blend of rich history and modern attractions. Visitors can explore the charming streets of the historic quarter, Casco Viejo, home to stunning medieval buildings, an impressive cathedral, and the lively Plaza Nueva, filled with bars and eateries. The iconic Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry, is a must-see, showcasing contemporary art and captivating architecture.
Food lovers will delight in Bilbao’s renowned culinary scene, particularly its famous pintxos—small bread portions topped with a variety of delicious ingredients, from jamón to seafood. Pair these with exquisite Rioja wines, a staple of the region, for a complete gastronomic experience. Visitors can take day trips to nearby vineyards or visit local wine bars for tastings.
This new offering by TUI is not just a travel opportunity; it represents a chance to connect with a culture that is rich in history and flavor. As interest in less conventional destinations grows, now is the perfect time to explore the Basque Country’s hidden treasures.
For those interested in booking, TUI advises visiting their official website or downloading their app for more information. Don’t miss this chance to discover a different side of Spain before the crowds return!
