Urgent Update: Man Wields Knife in Limerick Fast Food Incident
UPDATE: A man has been charged after brandishing a knife at patrons in a Limerick fast food restaurant, raising urgent safety concerns in the community. James O’Connor, 24, appeared before Limerick District Court today following the incident at Supermac’s on O’Connell Street at approximately 5:50 PM on May 20, 2025.
In a shocking revelation during court proceedings, Prosecuting Sergeant Denis Waters disclosed that O’Connor repeatedly flicked a knife open and closed, claiming he needed it “for his own protection.” According to O’Connor, he believed he was in danger of being targeted by others. However, authorities report that the knife was not used in a threatening manner.
Judge Patricia Harney expressed grave concerns about O’Connor’s character, noting his impulsive behavior during the hearing. When asked why he had the weapon, O’Connor admitted, “I was on drugs.” This admission has drawn immediate attention given his lengthy criminal record, which includes 31 previous convictions for various offenses, including drug possession and money laundering.
O’Connor is currently serving a four-week custodial sentence and has recently completed a treatment program at Coolmine Centre. His solicitor, John Herbert, mentioned that O’Connor is set to begin a new job at a call center, emphasizing the need for rehabilitation rather than punishment.
The judge has adjourned the case until May for a Probation Report and directed O’Connor to bring a wage slip to his next court appearance. This decision reflects the court’s focus on addressing O’Connor’s underlying issues, as Judge Harney questioned whether he could maintain employment given his impulsive tendencies.
As this case develops, the community watches closely, concerned about the implications of such behavior in public spaces. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges surrounding drug abuse and impulsive actions that can pose risks to public safety.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging anyone with further information to come forward, highlighting the importance of community vigilance in ensuring safety.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as we follow O’Connor’s case and its implications for the Limerick community.
