Greenland’s Red Cap Trend: A Response to Trump’s Past Remarks
In Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, a new trend has emerged centered around a striking red cap that carries a bold message. This headwear has gained popularity following former President Donald Trump‘s previous comments regarding potential interest in purchasing the island from Denmark. The cap features the phrase “Nu det NUUK,” a clever play on words in Danish that translates to “Now it’s enough,” alongside the Greenland flag and the slogan “Make America Go Away.”
The cap’s playful yet pointed message has resonated with a wide audience, from children to restaurant staff, making it a local sensation. Notably, the item has sold out across Denmark, highlighting its rapid rise in popularity. The backlash against Trump’s remark has fueled local pride and an expression of identity among Greenlanders.
One of the key figures behind this cap is Victor Schøtt, a Danish influencer known for his popular TikTok car channel. Schøtt has established a web shop, Greenlandsupport.com, where he sells the caps and has pledged to donate all proceeds to two charities focused on children in Greenland. He expressed his motivation, stating, “I was in the shower and got incredibly annoyed by this bully. I was thinking about someone bigger than you saying that if you’re not going to sell it, they are just going to take it.”
The sudden popularity of the cap reflects a broader sentiment in Greenland, where many residents feel a strong connection to their land and culture. The design encourages a sense of unity and defiance against perceived external pressures.
As the cap continues to sell out, it not only serves as a fashion statement but also as a form of political expression. It has sparked conversations about national identity and autonomy, particularly in light of historical contexts surrounding Greenland’s relationship with both Denmark and the United States.
This trend illustrates how a simple piece of clothing can encapsulate a deeper message, resonating with individuals who wish to assert their identity in a changing political landscape. As the caps fly off the shelves, they embody a collective voice that says, “Enough is enough.”
