Iran’s Youth Rally for Change Amidst Escalating Protests
Iranians have returned to the streets in significant numbers, marking the largest protests since 2019. Demonstrations erupted across major cities, including Tehran, despite severe internet and telephone disruptions. Reports indicate that mosques in the affluent Gholhak and Sa’adat Abad neighborhoods were set ablaze, as the country grapples with rising discontent among its younger population.
The protests intensified following a call for a general strike from seven Kurdish political parties, urging citizens in Shia-majority Lorestan and Kurdish-majority provinces of Kermanshah and Ilam to escalate their actions. Exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi, who leads a monarchist opposition faction, has appealed to the Iranian public to unite against the 47-year-old theocratic government. In a message posted on X, he stated, “Great nation of Iran, the eyes of the world are upon you. Take to the streets, and as a united front, shout your demands.” He further urged security forces to protect the populace rather than turn against them.
Nearly five decades after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran’s ruling clerics are struggling to align their governance with the aspirations of a younger society. A 25-year-old jobless graduate from Kuhdasht in Lorestan, named Mina, expressed her frustration to Reuters, saying, “I just want to live a peaceful, normal life… Instead, they insist on a nuclear programme, supporting armed groups in the region and maintaining hostility toward the United States.” She emphasized that the priorities of the regime, which may have been relevant in 1979, no longer resonate with today’s realities.
As protests have surged, activists have leveraged satellite-based communication systems, including Elon Musk’s Starlink, to bypass internet restrictions and share updates online. Iranian authorities have responded by targeting social media accounts of influencers, replacing some posts with warning messages indicating judicial action due to alleged criminal activity.
The unrest initially stemmed from economic grievances, particularly concerning the sharp decline of the Iranian currency, the rial, which has experienced over 40 percent inflation. These economic issues prompted protests beginning on December 28, 2022, in Tehran’s central bazaar. University students, numbering approximately 3.5 million, have taken to the streets, backed by labor unions and public support. The focus has shifted from economic complaints to political demands for regime change, reflecting the aspirations of a population where about three-fifths of the 93 million citizens are under the age of 39.
In response to the growing unrest, Iranian state media have accused the United States and Israeli agents of inciting violence. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, claimed that those involved in the demonstrations aimed to please former U.S. President Donald Trump. Historically, the Iranian government has employed harsh measures to quell protests, including mass arrests and violence.
While authorities initially suggested a willingness to dialogue with demonstrators, their stance has hardened in recent days. The Norway-based Iran Human Rights organization reported that at least 45 demonstrators have lost their lives amid the unrest. The Washington-based Human Rights Activists News Agency stated that over 2,200 people have been arrested since protests began. Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, the head of Iran’s judiciary, warned the public through Iranian media that the government would show no mercy. “The enemy has officially announced its support,” he stated. “I tell the people and the families that this time no one will be spared.”
The ongoing protests highlight the chasm between the Iranian government’s priorities and the expectations of its youth, igniting questions about the regime’s future as the populace continues to demand change.
