School Bus Carrying 40 Children Overturns in Belleeks Crash
Emergency crews responded rapidly to a serious incident involving a school bus that overturned in Belleeks, Co Armagh, on February 17, 2024. The bus was reportedly carrying around 40 children from St Paul’s High School when the collision occurred shortly before 15:45.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) confirmed they were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call at 15:38. Multiple resources were mobilized, which included five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, one officer, and an ambulance doctor.
According to police, the crash took place in the Tullyah Road area, located between Newtownhamilton and Camlough. Authorities have advised road users to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while investigations continue.
A local representative, Justin McNulty, expressed relief that all the children involved were able to walk away from the incident with minor injuries. He stated, “Thankfully around 40 of them all walked away from the scene and are home. A few of them had minor injuries but nothing serious.”
McNulty also highlighted concerns for the well-being of the bus driver, stressing the potential severity of the incident. “This could have been very much more serious. When an incident involves a school bus crash, you hope the worst hasn’t happened,” he added.
While the situation was serious, the fact that the children emerged relatively unscathed is a source of relief for parents and the community. Local authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations into the crash unfold.
Emergency responders remain on the scene to ensure the safety of the area. Further details will be released as they become available.
