Home Care Assistants in Donegal Plan Industrial Action Next Month

Home Care Assistants in Donegal, along with their colleagues in four other counties, are preparing to initiate industrial action next month if the Health Service Executive (HSE) does not engage in negotiations regarding their working conditions. A significant majority, specifically 95 percent of members from the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (Siptu), have voted in favor of industrial action, which may include strikes.

The decision comes after claims that the HSE has failed to implement improvements in terms and conditions that were agreed upon eight years ago. The potential action could disrupt services not only in Donegal but also in Clare, Cork, Kerry, and Limerick, affecting many individuals who rely on these essential home care services.

Graham Macken, a Siptu Organiser, expressed that there is still time to avoid the planned action. He emphasized the importance of immediate discussions to resolve the ongoing issues. “It’s not too late for the action to be avoided,” he stated, urging the HSE to take the necessary steps to address the concerns raised by the workers.
