Europe Mobilizes Amid Growing Middle East Conflict Fallout
The ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel’s military actions against Iran has prompted European leaders to take urgent steps to manage the repercussions of the expanding hostilities. On March 11, 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Cyprus to affirm Europe’s commitment to the island’s security following a drone strike on the Akrotiri airbase.
Last week, a drone manufactured by Iran, reportedly launched by Hizbullah, targeted the British airbase located on Cyprus’s southern coast. Two additional drones were intercepted in Lebanese airspace while en route to Larnaca International Airport. In remarks that highlighted the escalating tensions, Iranian Revolutionary Guard General Sardar Jabbari indicated that the shift of US aircraft to Akrotiri placed the base “in the frame” of potential attacks.
European leaders are adopting varied stances regarding the conflict. While the UK has refrained from joining the offensive, it has deployed a warship to defend Akrotiri and granted the US limited access to the base for defensive operations. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated he accepted a US request aimed at thwarting Iranian missile threats, asserting, “The only way to stop the threat posed by Iran is to destroy its missiles at source.”
Responses from European Nations
In contrast, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed solidarity with US and Israeli interests in curbing Iran’s influence but ruled out sending military support to Cyprus. Berlin’s focus remains on safeguarding its eastern European allies, including Poland, Romania, and Lithuania.
Addressing the situation differently, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized the importance of opposing both the Iranian regime and any military intervention lacking international legitimacy. He pointed out that the current conflict lacks authorization from the US Congress or the United Nations Security Council. This perspective resonates with leaders from Ireland, Austria, and Malta.
In response to the growing threat, Spain has deployed the Cristóbal Colón, a frigate equipped with a high-precision anti-missile defense system capable of intercepting targets from a distance of up to 150 kilometers. Greece has taken decisive measures by sending four advanced F-16 Viper fighter jets along with two frigates to bolster defenses in Cyprus. France has contributed naval ships and anti-drone systems to the region, while both Italy and the Netherlands have announced plans to dispatch frigates to support the efforts.
Economic Impacts of the Conflict
The repercussions of the Middle East conflict are being felt more acutely in Europe than in the United States. Former International Monetary Fund chief economist Maurice Obstfeld noted that European economies, heavily reliant on Gulf oil, are facing significant challenges. The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of Gulf oil exports pass, has driven oil prices to a four-year high.
Additionally, transportation costs for exporting goods by air from Asia to Europe have surged by 45 percent, a stark contrast to the rise for exports to the US. Although the US is not immune to the economic fallout, experiencing rising petrol prices and increased costs for essential agricultural inputs, the scale of the impact appears to be greater in Europe.
As the conflict persists, supply chain disruptions are anticipated, potentially extending beyond the duration projected during the previous US administration. The situation remains fluid, and European leaders are likely to continue recalibrating their strategies in response to developments in the region.
