Tullamore Plans Memorial Walk to Honor Ashling Murphy’s Legacy
Next week, Tullamore will commemorate the fourth anniversary of the tragic death of Ashling Murphy with a memorial mass followed by a commemorative walk. Ashling, a young schoolteacher, was murdered in January 2022 by Jozef Puška during an evening run, an event that shocked the nation and left a profound impact on her community.
To honor her memory, the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund has organized a mass scheduled for Sunday, January 11, 2024, at 09:30 in St. Brigid’s Church, Mountbolus. The memorial walk will take place the following day, January 12, leading to Ashling’s Memorial Shrine located along the Grand Canal in Tullamore.
Walkers are set to gather at Digby Bridge Carpark, Capincurr, at 15:00. Participants who prefer to walk along the canal from the Tullamore side can meet at the memorial shrine at 15:15. The walk will cover approximately 25 to 30 minutes, starting from the Fiona Pender Monument and concluding at Ashling’s Memorial.
The impact of Ashling’s life continues to resonate deeply, with many in the community expressing their condolences and support for the memorial fund. One Facebook user shared heartfelt sentiments, stating, “As a mother of four beautiful girls, I can never get over what happened to beautiful Ashling and what her poor family goes through every single day.” Another remarked on the tragedy, saying, “Poor young woman. Just minding her own business and not bothering anyone. Very sad for her boyfriend, her friends, and family.”
Since its establishment, the memorial fund has raised significant amounts to support local initiatives in Tullamore, benefiting various sports clubs, musical societies, and community groups. The fund has amassed tens of thousands of euros, directed towards projects that honor Ashling’s legacy and the lives she touched.
As the anniversary approaches, many have continued to pay tribute to Ashling, reflecting on the promise of her future and the deep loss felt by her family and friends. The upcoming events in Tullamore aim not only to remember Ashling but also to foster community spirit and solidarity in the face of tragedy.
