Taoiseach Supports Ireland’s Upcoming Matches Against Israel
The matches between the Republic of Ireland and Israel in the Nations League will proceed as scheduled, according to Taoiseach Micheal Martin. He emphasized the importance of differentiating between the Israeli government’s policies and the Israeli people. This statement follows the Football Association of Ireland’s (FAI) confirmation that the national team will fulfill its fixtures against Israel, despite having previously called for the nation to be banned from UEFA competitions.
In November 2022, the FAI had approved a motion advocating for Israel’s exclusion from UEFA due to alleged breaches of its codes, which was ultimately rejected. The Nations League draw placed both teams in Group B3, and the FAI swiftly released a statement indicating that the matches will take place. Israel’s home game is scheduled for September 27, 2023, while the Republic of Ireland will host the return match on October 4, 2023.
Daniel Lambert, chief commercial officer of Bohemians FC, who proposed the motion at the FAI general assembly, expressed concerns regarding Israel’s compliance with UEFA regulations, particularly regarding clubs operating in occupied territories and anti-racism policies. Speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland, Lambert remarked that it was “inexplicable” that no penalties had been imposed on Israel for these alleged violations. He acknowledged that choosing not to play Israel could have financial repercussions but insisted it would be the “right thing to do.”
On Friday, Taoiseach Martin reiterated that the matches “should go ahead,” commending the FAI for their decision. He noted that the Ireland team has “been doing very well so far” and extended his best wishes for their continued success. When questioned about the appropriateness of hosting the away game in Israel, Martin stated that such matters are determined by sporting authorities. He clarified, “There is no official boycott of Israel,” and reaffirmed Ireland’s focus on promoting peace in the Middle East.
While the Irish Government has expressed strong opposition to the Israeli government’s policies in Gaza, Martin urged the need to separate the state’s actions from its citizens. “Sport can be challenging when it intersects with politics,” he remarked, highlighting that it is the responsibility of international sporting organizations to address these issues. He also assured that Irish security authorities would ensure a safe environment for the matches to proceed.
Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson reiterated his previous comments regarding the inconsistency of FIFA and UEFA’s actions. He questioned why Israel has not faced similar sanctions to those imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Hallgrimsson emphasized that it is ultimately up to individual players to decide whether they feel comfortable participating in the matches against Israel.
The other teams in Group B3 include Austria and Kosovo. The Israel Football Association has yet to respond to requests for comment. As the fixtures approach, the situation continues to draw attention from various stakeholders, reflecting the complex interplay of sports, politics, and international relations.
