The University of Limerick (UL) is set to invest several million euros in a comprehensive global recruitment campaign aimed at attracting top-tier research talent. Announced on February 9, 2026, the initiative, named UL Changemakers, focuses on bringing exceptional researchers to the region who are eager to innovate and lead in various fields.

This campaign will initially open 35 academic positions across the university in diverse disciplines, including social justice, democratic resilience, artificial intelligence, pharmaceutical science, health services research, and sustainable electrical engineering, among others. The initiative reflects UL’s commitment to enhancing its research capabilities while fostering an inclusive community for academics from around the world.

Professor Shane Kilcommins, the Acting President of the University of Limerick, emphasized the significance of this recruitment drive. He stated, “UL Changemakers represents a bold and necessary investment in the power of research to shape a better future.” He highlighted that world-class scholarship not only advances knowledge but also informs policy and strengthens communities.

Strengthening Research Culture and Global Competitiveness

The UL Changemakers initiative aims to strengthen the university’s research performance and elevate its global standing. This recruitment strategy is part of a broader long-term investment in research excellence, outlined in the Wisdom for Action Research Strategy 2022-2027, and is supported by the University of Limerick Foundation.

Professor Kevin Ryan, Vice President for Research and Innovation, elaborated on the university’s goals. He said, “We are seeking researchers who not only excel in their disciplines but who are eager to challenge conventions and inspire innovation.” He expressed the importance of embedding research deeply into the university culture, asserting that it must be a central focus as UL transitions into a more research-intensive institution.

This initiative not only aims to recruit outstanding academics but also seeks to create an immersive research environment that champions excellence and drives sustainable economic growth in Ireland. The university is looking for changemakers who can deliver impactful research that addresses pressing societal issues.

As the University of Limerick embarks on this ambitious recruitment campaign, it underscores its ongoing commitment to fostering a vibrant research culture that is globally competitive and socially engaged. The UL Changemakers initiative is poised to attract remarkable talent and enhance the university’s reputation as a leader in research and innovation, ultimately contributing to a brighter future for both academia and society at large.
