Dublin Teen Charged with Gun and Drug Offenses After Arrest

An 18-year-old man faces serious charges after allegedly being found with a loaded Glock handgun and significant quantities of cocaine. Morgan Ennis, of Cherry Orchard Drive, Ballyfermot, appeared before Dublin District Court on January 7, 2024, to respond to allegations under the Misuse of Drugs Act and the Firearms Act.

The charges stem from a police operation that reportedly uncovered a bag containing 71 grams of cocaine, valued at approximately €5,000, along with another tub containing a substance believed to be cocaine, estimated at €20,000. During the search, Gardaí also seized a small amount of cash and drug paraphernalia.

Garda Ciaran Murray stated in court that the handgun, which was described as “primed for use,” was discovered wrapped in cellophane in Ennis’s garden. He noted that the weapon had nine rounds of ammunition ready in the magazine. Ennis did not respond to the charges when they were read in court, and his mobile phone was also confiscated during the investigation.

Ennis’s defence solicitor, Lorraine Stephens, requested bail, emphasizing that her client, a father of one, had distanced others in the household from any involvement. She argued that the substance found in the tub might be creatine, a claim she supported by referencing a previous case where the supplement had been misidentified as drugs.

The defence highlighted that defendants facing serious charges often receive bail and pointed out that Ennis had no serious prior convictions. They noted he had been actively engaging with a community-based organization aimed at supporting families and young people. Family members attended the hearing and provided bail money along with an alternative address for Ennis’s residence.

Despite the arguments for bail, Judge Karen Dowling remarked on the gravity of the situation, indicating that both ballistics and drug analysis were pending. She stressed the importance of compliance with the court’s conditions, warning Ennis that failure to do so would result in further legal consequences.

Bail was set at €500 with strict conditions, including daily check-ins at a Garda station, providing a contact number, adhering to a curfew, and residing at a designated address. Ennis acknowledged the order by confirming his understanding before being released, with a subsequent court appearance scheduled for later in the month. Legal aid was granted to him for the proceedings.

This case underscores ongoing concerns regarding youth involvement in crime and the implications of drug-related offenses in Dublin.
