UPDATE: A man has been charged with the murder of businessman Stephen McCahill, who was found dead outside his home in Beagh, Ardara, early this morning. Michael Maloney, 32, appeared at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court just hours after his arrest, confirming the urgent nature of this case.

The tragic incident occurred around 3:50 AM on January 5, 2024. Authorities describe it as a fatal assault, prompting immediate action from law enforcement. Maloney, related to McCahill by marriage, was taken into custody shortly after the body was discovered. He was charged with murder under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1964.

In a tense courtroom appearance, Maloney, dressed in a dark hoodie and baseball cap, was escorted by detectives. Detective Garda Patrick Kelly testified that Maloney was arrested at 2:25 PM and charged by 3:35 PM. Notably, Maloney remained silent regarding the charge.

Legal representation for Maloney, solicitor Mark Mullaney, requested legal aid, stating that his client receives social welfare support and has a diagnosed psychiatric illness. Mullaney emphasized the need for appropriate medication during Maloney’s time in custody.

As the case escalates, Garda Sergeant Jim Collins requested that Maloney be remanded in custody, with no bail application made due to the murder charge. He will next appear via videolink on January 12, 2024, while being detained at Castlerea Prison.

The community has been deeply affected by McCahill’s death. Known for co-owning the Corner House bar in Ardara, he was celebrated as a local figure. Tributes poured in, including from popstar Imelda May, who visited the bar just last Saturday. McCahill was also a husband and father, survived by his wife Marietta and children Stephen and Gemma.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for today, and McCahill’s funeral is set for Saturday. The shocking nature of his death has left many in the community mourning the loss of a beloved friend and business owner.

As developments continue, the case highlights the profound impact of violence in communities, raising questions about safety and justice. Stay tuned for further updates as this story unfolds.
