Urgent: Pension Talks for School Staff Break Down, Strikes Loom
BREAKING: Talks on pensions for school secretaries and caretakers have collapsed, as confirmed by trade union FÓRSA this evening. This critical breakdown at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) raises the specter of renewed strike action, following a major disruption earlier this year.
In late August and early September, over 2,800 staff across 2,300 schools engaged in a strike, severely impacting payroll systems and essential school services. Labour TD Eoghan Kenny has urgently called on the government to intervene and prevent further industrial action.
The longstanding conflict between the Department of Education and school secretaries revolves around pay and pension entitlements. Despite a landmark agreement in 2022 that placed secretaries on the public sector payroll, many are still not classified as public servants, leaving them without equivalent pension rights.
FÓRSA attributed the breakdown to the Department’s “failure to engage meaningfully” with union proposals on critical pension issues, including the recognition of prior service. The union stated that “no progress” was made this week on comparable pension benefits.
Andy Pike, FÓRSA’s head of education, emphasized the dire consequences of this impasse: “School secretaries and caretakers stand to lose significant pension value, many of whom have decades of employment behind them.” He warned that without an agreement reflecting their prior service, further strike action is likely.
Kenny described the situation as “deeply disappointing,” highlighting the urgent need for government intervention. “The breakdown of talks at the WRC today is deeply disappointing and reflects a failure to deliver a fair pathway on pensions for workers who have given decades of service,” he stated.
He called for the new Minister for Education and the Minister for Public Expenditure to engage seriously in negotiations to avert a crisis. “Industrial action must be prevented,” he insisted.
The union plans to refer the matter to the Labour Court, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for fair treatment of school staff. FÓRSA remains committed to pursuing a satisfactory agreement through the State’s industrial relations mechanisms.
As the situation develops, the urgency for government action is clear. School secretaries and caretakers have demonstrated extraordinary patience, but their calls for a just and long-overdue resolution continue to resonate.
Stay tuned for updates on this critical issue impacting thousands of dedicated education professionals. The Department of Education has been contacted for further comment.
