Planning permission has been granted for a new multi-storey health centre in the heart of Limerick. The Limerick City and County Council approved the project, allowing the Health Service Executive (HSE) to move forward with the development on the grounds of St Joseph’s Hospital, located on Mulgrave Street.

Details of the Health Centre

The proposed facility will consist of a four-storey unit featuring a doctor’s surgery, a Breastcheck clinic, and various community care services. Additionally, it will accommodate dental patients and provide support for individuals managing chronic diseases. The centre will include consulting rooms, a retail café, and associated administrative offices.

To ensure accessibility, the facility plans to offer 110 car parking spaces, with seven specifically designed for wheelchair users. There will also be space for 110 bicycles, promoting sustainable transportation options for visitors.

The centre’s location at the front of the St Joseph’s Hospital site is considered strategic, as it aims to enhance healthcare delivery in the region. In documentation presented to council planners, the HSE described the project as “a critical infrastructure project” essential for advancing the Slaintecare strategy, which seeks to reform Ireland’s healthcare system.

According to the HSE, “The Primary Care Centre is to provide accommodation for two primary care teams currently based in Limerick in accommodation which falls short of what is required by best practice health design.”

Future Developments on the Site

While significant portions of St Joseph’s Hospital are currently out of use, the HSE has plans to revitalize the former psychiatric hospital building. This redevelopment is expected to create a new administrative hub for local health services. Furthermore, a new mental health day hospital and rehabilitation facility are also in the pipeline, which will restore the site to its previous healthcare functions.

The council’s decision to grant planning permission includes 14 conditions, one of which mandates that the HSE contribute €294,800 towards local infrastructure and facilities that will benefit the area. This funding is intended to support enhancements that will accommodate the increased demands associated with the new health centre.

The approval marks a significant step toward improving healthcare access and services in Limerick, aligning with broader national health reform initiatives.
